2015 WA Sculptor's Scholarship Announced

For the second year, judges have awarded two artists the $10,000 Western Australian Sculptor Scholarship. At the Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe launch, it was announced that artists Norton Flavel and Kim Perrier will share the scholarship to be used for travel, study and the advancement of their career.
The Hon. John Day MLA, Minister for Planning, Culture and the Arts made the announcements. This scholarship has been offered since 2005 and this is the third year it has been funded by an anonymous donor. Flavel and Perrier are also invited to exhibit their stand out works at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2015 this October.
Founding Director, David Handley said, “Norton and Kim have both made ambitious and exciting works which are an immense credit to each of them and wonderful additions to the show.”
Norton Flavel will be well remembered by Perth audiences for his bulk carrier sculpture from last year. His gravity defying work, lucky country, references the Australian psyche, the tension between positives and negatives and what we choose to see.
Kim Perrier’s ashes to ashes, technically stunning and mystical work, celebrates the relationship between trees and humanity, the tree becoming the vessel for the transmigration of soul. Perrier ponders the tree as a sentient being.
The awards were selected by a judging panel of leading figures in the visual arts:
Dr Michael Hill, Head of Art History & Theory, National Art School;
Julienne Penny, Director, Tunbridge Gallery; and
Dr Nien Schwarz, Artist, Senior Lecturer, School of Communication & the Arts, Edith Cowan University
The judges said both works were standouts and deserved to be acknowledged so they decided to share the award.
This is only the second time the scholarship has been shared. Only Western Australian artists are eligible for the scholarship and last year it was awarded to Kerrie Argent for overconsumption and Elaine Clocherty for overnight.
All Western Australian artists with works appearing in Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe are eligible for the Western Australian Sculptor Scholarship. The Scholarships will be used for travel, study and advancement of both artists' careers and includes an invitation to the Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2015 exhibition.
